WWRC’s Services/Trades Training Area currently offers seven (7) training programs in automotive, culinary skills/food service, and health occupation business sectors. Each Training Program curriculum and expected knowledge, skills, and abilities are developed in partnership with a designated Occupational Advisory Committee.

Automotive Field

Auto Service Technician Training Program

Training Program Description: WWRC's Auto Service Technician Training Program is an approved program by the Accrediting Commission of the Council on Occupational Education (COE). While enrolled in the Training Program, students are expected to earn a Customer Service workplace certification as well as the OSHA 10 workforce credential.

Prerequisites:
  • Meet WWRC admission criteria
  • Have a valid driver's license
  • Have use of both arms and hands
  • Able to lie on back and work with arms overhead
  • Able to read and comprehend work orders and specification charts
  • Able to measure liquids by ounce
  • Able to read and comprehend linear measurements
  • Have sufficient vision
  • Able to lift 25-50 pounds on a daily basis
  • 7th grade reading level strongly preferred
Completion Requirements: A student must demonstrate mastery of a minimum 80% of core competencies, as documented on the Vocational Skills Record to be eligible for graduation.

*Note: Successful completion of (or demonstrated mastery of) the WWRC Auto Service Technician Training Program is a prerequisite for entry to WWRC's General Services Technician course, offered through the WWRC External Training Option (ETO) Program.

Employment Settings: Graduates of this training program obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities for entry level employment in the service department of new and used car dealers, service centers, independent repair garages, and service stations. Job Titles may include: Tire Repairer or Lubrication Server.

Culinary Skills/Food Service Field

Cafeteria Attendant Training Program

Training Program Description: WWRC's Cafeteria Attendant Training Program is an approved program by the Accrediting Commission of the Council on Occupational Education (COE). The training program is one of four offered in the Culinary Skills/Food Service Occupational Field through the Services/Trades Training Area within the Career and Workforce Development Division (CWDD). Training Program curriculum and expected knowledge, skills, and abilities are developed in partnership with a designated Occupational Advisory Committee.

Students enrolled in the WWRC Cafeteria Attendant Training Program have the opportunity to obtain ServSafe and Customer Service workplace certifications.

Prerequisites:
  • Meet WWRC admission criteria
  • Be able to tolerate job expectations of walking, stooping, and standing for up to four hours at a time and lifting up to 35 pounds
  • Have sufficient vision and use of arms and hands
  • Have good communication skills
  • Be able to follow simple oral (gestured) and written directions
  • Be free from communicable diseases
  • Be free from involuntary physical reactions creating unsanitary conditions
Completion Requirements: A student must demonstrate mastery of a minimum 80% of core competencies, as documented on the Vocational Skills Record to be eligible for graduation.

Employment Settings: Graduates of this training program obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities for entry level employment in cafeterias, hospitals, institutional facilities, lunchrooms and coffee shops. Job Titles may include: Busser; Bus Person; and, Bar Back.

Dishwasher Training Program

Training Program Description: WWRC's Dishwasher Training Program is an approved program by the Accrediting Commission of the Council on Occupational Education (COE). The training program is one of four offered in the Culinary Skills/Food Service Occupational Field through the Services/Trades Training Area within the Career and Workforce Development Division (CWDD). Training Program curriculum and expected knowledge, skills, and abilities are developed in partnership with a designated Occupational Advisory Committee.

Training Program Description: WWRC's Kitchen Assistant Training Program is an approved program by the Accrediting Commission of the Council on Occupational Education (COE). The training program is one of four offered in the Culinary Skills/Food Service Occupational Field through the Services/Trades Training Area within the Career and Workforce Development Division (CWDD). Training Program curriculum and expected knowledge, skills, and abilities are developed in partnership with a designated Occupational Advisory Committee.

Cook's Assistant Training Program

Training Program Description: WWRC's Cook's Assistant Training Program is an approved program by the Accrediting Commission of the Council on Occupational Education (COE). The training program is one of four offered in the Culinary Skills/Food Service Occupational Field through the Services/Trades Training Area within the Career and Workforce Development Division (CWDD). Training Program curriculum and expected knowledge, skills, and abilities are developed in partnership with a designated Occupational Advisory Committee.

Students enrolled in the WWRC Cafeteria Attendant Training Program have the opportunity to obtain ServSafe and Customer Service workplace certifications.

  • Completion or demonstrated mastery of the skills for the Kitchen Assistant Training Program
  • Ability to read and compute recipes requiring measurements
Completion Requirements: A student must demonstrate mastery of a minimum 80% of core competencies, as documented on the Vocational Skills Record to be eligible for graduation.
Employment Settings: Graduates of this training program obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities for entry level employment in cafeterias, hospitals, institutional facilities, lunchrooms and coffee shops. Job Titles may include: Cook’s Helper, Food Service Worker, and Deli Worker.

Health Occupations Field

Personal Care Aide (PCA) Training Program

Training Program Description: WWRC's Personal Care Aide (PCA) Training Program is an approved program by the Accrediting Commission of the Council on Occupational Education (COE). This training program is one of two offered in the Health Occupations Field through the Services/Trades Training Area within the Career and Workforce Development Division (CWDD). Both training programs in the Health Occupations Field prepare students for entry-level employment providing care to residents/patients in nursing homes or other health care facilities.

In the Personal Care Aide training program, clients acquire the basic skills and knowledge for assisting with personal care. Successful completion of this curriculum, or demonstrated/verified mastery of skills, is required for entry to the WWRC Nurse Aide Training Program.

The Personal Care Aide Program adheres to the established curriculum of the Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS). A designated Occupational Advisory Committee provides ongoing guidance for relevant instructional design, sequence and practices as well as current technologies, labor market trends, and industry expectations.

  • Be able to work in a fast-paced, often stressful environment
  • Have sufficient vision, hearing and use of hands
  • Be able to accurately tell time
Completion Requirements: A student must demonstrate mastery of a minimum 100% of core competencies, as documented on the Vocational Skills Record to be eligible for graduation.
*Note: A criminal background check will be required prior to employment.

Employment Settings: Assisted Living Facilities, Home Health Agencies, and Private Homes. Job Titles may include: Personal Care Provider, Personal Care Assistant, and Personal Home Care Aide.

Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) Training Program

Training Program Description:

WWRC's Nurse Aide Training Program is an approved program by the Accrediting Commission of the Council on Occupational Education (COE). This training program is one of two offered in the Health Occupations Field through the Services/Trades Training Area within the Career and Workforce Development Division (CWDD). Both training programs in the Health Occupations Field prepare students for entry-level employment providing care to residents/patients in nursing homes or other health care facilities. In the Personal Care Aide training program, students acquire the basic knowledge and skills for assisting with personal care. In the Nurse Aide Training Program, students acquire advanced knowledge and skills necessary to prepare them for providing care under the supervision of licensed personnel.

WWRC's Nurse Aide Program is approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing, in compliance with state regulations and requirements. The Board of Nursing must approve any changes in the Nurse Aide curriculum prior to implementation and must approve all instructors involved in the program and their credentials. A designated Occupational Advisory Committee provides ongoing guidance for relevant instructional design, sequence and practices as well as current technologies, labor market trends, and industry expectations.

Completion Requirements: A student must complete 100% of core competencies and pass a certification exam through the Virginia Board of Nursing to fully graduate from the training program. Certification is required for permanent employment in long-term care facilities and nursing homes.
