Health Occupations Training Program Personal Care Aide | Nurse Aide

WWRC’s Health Occupations Program currently offers two (2) Career Pathways:

A student may complete one (1) Career Pathway, or two (2) Career Pathways, if demonstrating proper competency per the Vocational Skills Records (VSR’s) on each Career Pathway.

Each Training Program curriculum and expected knowledge, skills, and abilities are developed in partnership with a designated Occupational Advisory Committee.

Health Occupations Training Program

Training Program Description: WWRC's Health Occupations Training Program is an approved program by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE).

In the Personal Care Aide training program, clients acquire the basic skills and knowledge for assisting with personal care. Successful completion of this curriculum, or demonstrated/verified mastery of skills, is required for entry to the WWRC Nurse Aide Program.

The Personal Care Aide Program adheres to the established curriculum of the Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS). A designated Occupational Advisory Committee provides ongoing guidance for relevant instructional design, sequence and practices as well as current technologies, labor market trends, and industry expectations.


Personal Care Aide (PCA)

Program Length 375 clock hours (60 training days/3 months) (1 Semeseter)
Prerequisites:
  • Meet WWRC admission criteria
  • Have potential to develop and maintain communication skills for a health care environment
  • Be able to tolerate job expectations of standing, walking, stooping and lifting up to 50 lbs
  • Be able to work in a fast-paced, often stressful environment
  • Have sufficient vision, hearing and use of hands
  • Be able to accurately tell time
Completion Requirements: A student must demonstrate mastery of a minimum 100% of core competencies, as documented on the Vocational Skills Record to be eligible for graduation.
*Note: A criminal background check will be required prior to employment.
Employment Settings: Assisted Living Facilities, Home Health Agencies, and Private Homes. Job Titles may include: Personal Care Provider, Personal Care Assistant, and Personal Home Care Aide.

Nurse Aide (NA)

WWRC's Nurse Aide Program is approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing, in compliance with state regulations and requirements. The Board of Nursing must approve any changes in the Nurse Aide curriculum prior to implementation and must approve all instructors involved in the program and their credentials. A designated Occupational Advisory Committee provides ongoing guidance for relevant instructional design, sequence and practices as well as current technologies, labor market trends, and industry expectations.

Program Length 750 clock hours (120 training days/6 months) (2 Semesters, plus a Summer Term)
Prerequisites:
  • Meet WWRC admission criteria
  • Have a valid driver's license
  • Have potential to develop and maintain communication skills for a health care environment
  • Be able to tolerate job expectations of standing, walking, stooping and lifting up to 50 lbs
  • Be able to work in a fast-paced, often stressful environment
  • Have sufficient vision, hearing and use of hands
  • Be able to accurately tell time
  • Successful completion of Personal Care Aide training program
  • Ability to tolerate job expectations of standing, walking, stooping, and lifting up to 80 pounds
Completion Requirements: A student must complete 100% of core competencies to graduate from the training program. After program completion, a student must pass a two part certification exam through the Virginia Board of Nursing to become certified, (CNA). Certification is required for permanent employment in long-term care facilities and nursing homes.
