Media / Resource Center

Media / Resource Center Overview

Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center's (WWRC) Media / Resource Center is available to provide client / student and faculty usage while supporting the educational / career related curriculum of the Training department.

The scope of services and materials include the following identified resources:

The Media / Resource center boasts 7 computers for student use. These computers are networked to a black and white laser printer and a color ink jet printer. One computer has a CD burner. One of the computers features a flatbed color scanner. One of the computers had the CAD program so that students may do homework in the Media Center, another features JAWS program for the Visually Impaired, and two feature Kurzweil 3000 software. All computers include such features as: Zoomtext, Athena Automated Card Catalog, Office XP, Internet, PrintShop, keyboarding software, and much more.

Staff members also have a variety of multi media equipment available for loan. Overhead projectors, LCD projectors, screens, laptop computers, TV / VCR, and conference call phone are all available for professional usage. Most of this media is usually in use in the training classrooms. The Media / Resource center also houses a specialty tape recorder for playing magazines for the Blind, TV / VCR / DVD combination, and business level electronic calculator.

The Media Center has over 3500 materials for check-out, including fiction and non-fiction. Among these are VCR tapes, large print books, books on CD and books on tape. There are individual collections of printed materials on disabilities and employment, and one area for materials for instructional use.

Seven newspapers are available to both staff and students daily. The Waynesboro, Staunton, Richmond and Harrisonburg papers are received daily. The Washington Post is available Monday - Friday. The Enterprise, a Patrick County weekly, is also available. Back issues of the paper are kept for approximately two weeks before recycling. Students are encouraged to access hometown papers via the Internet. The Media / Resource center also hosts over 25 periodicals, ranging from Staff Professional trades such as the Journal of Rehabilitation, to general interest magazines, such as Outdoor, Newsweek, and People. Back issues of magazines are kept for a year.

The Media Center also sponsors special events on a variety of topics. The library part hosts regular Third Thursday events, including visits from local authors, story tellers, and persons of interest such as local voting registrars, the head of Virginia Wheelin’ Sportsmen, Robin Clark, and the founder of our local Book ‘Em event, Officer Mark Kearney. The Employment Resource portion hosts Employer Panels which feature local employers, special presentations such as “Understanding Your Pay Stub”, and visits to Job Fairs.

The WWRC Media / Resource center is one of the many resources available to both staff and students. It strives to meet the needs of a vocational rehabilitation environment.
